If the Giants draft a replacement for Daniel Jones, the reporter discusses it.
The number of reporters and NFL insiders who are skeptical that the New York Giants will spend a high draft pick on a replacement for injured quarterback Daniel Jones in spring training is growing. Darryl Slater of NJ Advance Media for NJ.com is one of them.
In an article that was released on Thursday, Slater stated, “[Giants general manager Joe Schoen] has lots of roster holes to address other than quarterback — like offensive line, wide receiver, and edge rusher.” “Schoen may lose his job sooner rather than later if he forces a quarterback selection at, say, No. 7, and that player turns out to be a bust. For this reason, Schoen’s acquisition of a dynamic quarterback in the draft may have to wait until 2025.”
There are increasing rumors that Schoen and company still believe in Jones despite the 26-year-old’s poor play prior to his season-ending torn ACL on November 5. When Jones is healthy, Schoen expects him to be New York’s quarterback of choice, but he did not completely rule out using a 2024 first-round pick on a signal-caller during his Monday media conference.
“He’s not going to force a quarterback pick near the top of round one, especially since he has so many other issues to address,” Slater said of Schoen. Nor ought he to push it. Additionally, since round two—as well as round three, for that matter—remains a premium round in the draft, selecting a quarterback with either of those two-round selections is also advised.”
According to reports, the Giants can get out of the four-year deal Jones signed in March of this year as soon as the following season, but they’ll probably be stuck with him through the beginning of the 2024 campaign. Tommy DeVito, an undrafted rookie from New Jersey, is another player for New York that is performing well enough this fall to possibly earn a spot on the roster after Week 18. This is especially true if he helps the Giants win enough of their remaining five games to knock them out of the top five spots in next year’s draft order.
Slater proposed that Schoen hold off on selecting a quarterback until the fourth round of the 2024 draft. That would give Jones the freedom to recover throughout the spring and summer without worrying about his job security, but it would also enrage supporters who are currently hoping the team would sign North Carolina Tar Heels star Drake Maye or USC Trojans star Caleb Williams.
