Adrian Wojnarowski reports that the Miami Heat have hired Spoelstra to an eight-year contract worth over $120 million. According to ESPN, this is the largest sum of money ever committed to a coach in any sport in North America, not just the NBA.
With an average yearly pay of $16 million, Gregg Popovich earns the highest salary, while Spoelstra, who will make about $15 million, wins the title of total compensation due to the length of Popovich’s $80 million contract, which he signed with the San Antonio Spurs this past summer. Steve Kerr of Golden State and Monty Williams of Detroit, with an AAV of slightly over $13 million ($78.5 million over six years), are the next two players on the list.
