The New York Knicks are expected to sign center/forward Taj Gibson to a 10-day contract, paving the way for his third stint in Manhattan, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN. The Knicks signed Gibson as they get ready to play without two-time All-Star Julius Randle for an indefinite period of time after he suffered a dislocated shoulder during Saturday’s game against the Miami Heat.

Having worked with Knicks head coach Tom Thibodeau in Chicago and Minnesota as well as during two previous stints with the team, Gibson is one of the eight active players remaining from the 2009 NBA Draft.

After Mitchell Robinson’s injury in early December sidelined him permanently, he played 10 games this time around and finished his three complete seasons with the team (2019–22). Gibson played less than ten minutes a night and averaged 1.8 rebounds and 1.4 points during that later period.

Thibodeau stated that Gibson has a “open door” to return to the New York bench, either as a coach or a player, despite his comparatively short tenure.

According to Peter Botte of the New York Post, Thibodeau stated, “We always have a spot for him,” following Gibson’s waiver earlier this month. “I believe he has some more left in him. When that time comes, I believe he’ll be an excellent coach as well. We’ll observe how things work out.

Despite having the longest winning streak in the NBA right now (30-17), the Knicks’ resilience has been put to the test by injuries to Isaiah Hartenstein and Julius Randle, the latter of whom missed two games because of Achilles tightness.

Even though Precious Achiuwa has filled in admirably, the team is still looking at ways to add to its depth before the trade deadline, even though the interior is largely unfilled. Due to the offseason trade of primary backup post player Obi Toppin to the Indiana Pacers, Randle has primarily played without a spell option this season.

The Knicks play their first game back at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday night against the Utah Jazz (7:30 p.m. ET, MSG).
