LB is signed by Patriots rival team from practice squad for third stint.
The Dolphins needed a linebacker, so on Saturday they went and grabbed one off their opponent’s practice squad.
Calvin Munson from the Patriots practice squad was signed by Miami, the team announced. Munson has signed a three-year contract with the Dolphins.
During the Dolphins’ Week 13 victory over the Washington Commanders, Jerome Baker sustained an ACL injury. The linebacker is week-to-week, according to coach Mike McDaniel, but on Saturday, he was placed on injured reserve, which is what led the Dolphins to trade for Munson. Baker is expected to miss the next four games minimum. On January 7, during the regular-season finale against the Buffalo Bills, he is eligible to make a comeback.
Munson joined the Dolphins in 2009 and has played in a total of 22 games. He recorded five special teams stops in addition to nine solo tackles (13 total). Though Munson has spent the entire season on the Patriots practice squad, he has played in three games for New England and has accumulated a tackle.
Since 2019, the 28-year-old has alternated between rival AFC teams.
Munson recorded two sacks, 55 solo tackles, and one forced fumble in 46 career games.

Bill Belichick’s coaching staff is losing a bright young coach.
ESPN’s Pete Thamel reports that Ross Douglas will be coaching wide receivers at Syracuse University. In addition to being Troy Brown’s co-wide receivers coach in New England, the 29-year-old was the offensive coordinator for the East-West Shrine Bowl the previous season.
Douglas, who has spent several seasons on NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero’s annual list as a potential head coach, will now focus on collegiate football.
Douglas, one of the youngest assistant coaches in the NFL, started out as a defensive quality control coach when he came to Foxborough in 2021 and rose through the ranks fast. Last season, Belichick held the position of assistant wide receivers coach, but for this one, he decided to omit the word “assistant.”
He will join Syracuse’s new coaching staff after head coach Dino Babers was let go last month. Given that the Patriots are now dead last in the AFC at 3-10, it will be interesting to see how much turmoil there is in Foxborough during the offseason.
