The coaches of Tennessee keep monitoring their targets from coast to coast.
On Monday, Tennessee employees dispersed across the nation to commence the initial week of communication preceding Early Signing Day.

The first full week of the contact period leading up to Early Signing Day began on Monday, after Vols coach Josh Heupel and his staff dispersed across the nation following their weekend-long visits with some of Tennessee’s top targets and commitments. The Vols began searching the transfer market and checking in on targets from coast to coast in the 2024 class and future classes after opening the transfer portal to all underclassmen.

Tennessee’s Mount Juliet After a promising start to his sophomore season, Tennessee extended a scholarship offer to Caden Harris in late September. He didn’t hesitate to get to Knoxville and see the Vols for the first time.

The cornerback from Brownsville, Tennessee’s Haywood High School, class of 2026, said Tennessee impressed him right away on October 14 when he visited for the Vols’ victory over Texas A&M. They are among the teams that, in the early phases of his recruitment, are most striking to him, he claimed, and they have already attracted his attention for a number of reasons.

With Georgia’s Nyland Green leaping to the top of the defensive back rankings and into the top 5 overall with a 95 overall rating, the college football transfer portal is welcoming some of the best cornerbacks it has ever seen. This offseason, more than 300 defensive backs have registered on the portal; nearly 200 of those players have received three-star ratings or better.

Green is the fifth transfer cornerback to receive a four-star rating this offseason. We’ve also made the decision to examine the top ten corners to date to join the portal, offering information on team interest and arranging visits for a number of the best prospects.

The transfer cornerback rankings were headed by Toriano Pride, a former Clemson Tiger, before Green entered the portal. He showed how quickly things can move in the portal before it closes at the end of the day on January 1, 2024, by committing to Missouri on Wednesday.

One game into the season, Perkins informed the Gators of his plans to use the transfer portal back in September. In the season-opening victory over Utah, he played in a limited capacity and made one tackle. Playing the STAR position, he recorded 14 tackles (12 solo), 2 tackles for loss, and 1 interception in all 13 games for Florida in 2022. That season, he gave up 159 yards and one touchdown on 14 receptions on 18 targets while covering.

In his 12 regular-season games as a senior, Turnage—a former four-star recruit—totaled nine tackles and one pass breakup for the Vols. Starting the season as the No. 2 STAR behind Tamarion McDonald, he moved to cornerback where, in 11 games, he played in a rotation to provide depth. As the season progressed, he saw less and less defensive snaps; in the final three games, he played just 10 snaps. Averaging 74.9 yards and a touchdown on 12 receptions on 22 targets, he was a Pro Football Focus coverage grader.

After logging nine total tackles in 11 games this season, Geiger entered the portal as a graduate transfer. He was hurt during Kentucky’s Week 3 loss at Georgia, and he was unable to play in the following Saturday’s Missouri game. When he returned against Tennessee, his playing time significantly decreased. Geiger finished the regular season with 15 defensive snaps against Louisville, having recorded at least 31 defensive snaps in each of the previous five weeks of the season. After allowing three catches on four targets for 62 yards, he recorded a 67.0 PFF grade.

As a junior this season, Chappell started all 12 games for the Aggies and finished with 40 tackles and five pass breakups. He was a three-star recruit in Texas A&M’s talented 2022 class. Having played multiple positions in the secondary, the former SEC All-Freshman selection has given up 20 receptions on 42 targets for 210 yards and a touchdown this season. He limited opposing wide receivers to just 74 yards after the catch thanks to his physical style, which is among the best results in the SEC this season.

In Dan Lanning’s debut season in 2022, Bridges started all 13 games at cornerback and finished with the third-most defensive snaps (704) and a career-high 49 tackles, five pass breakups, three interceptions, and a forced fumble. For his efforts, he was named to the Pac-12’s third team of all players. But this fall, with Khyree Jackson and Jahlil Florence starting at corner, his role was lessened. This season, he played 205 snaps and finished with 16 tackles and 3 pass breakups.
