Nancy Wilson, the esteemed former head coach of the University of South Carolina (USC) women’s basketball team and a member of the 2021 USC Athletics Hall of Fame, has tragically passed away following an emergency hospitalization earlier today. She was 73 years old.


A Storied Career in South Carolina Basketball

Born on October 18, 1951, in Lake City, South Carolina, Wilson began her basketball journey at Coker College, where she was a standout player. After earning her bachelor’s degree in Physical Education in 1973, she embarked on a coaching career that would span over three decades. Wilson served as the head coach at the College of Charleston from 1976 to 1984, compiling a 193–64 record and leading the team to three AIAW Division II Championship appearances. She then took the helm at USC from 1985 to 1997, where she became the program’s all-time winningest coach with a 231–149 record. Under her leadership, the Gamecocks secured five NCAA Tournament appearances, including a Sweet 16 run in 1990, and won five Metro Conference titles. Wilson returned to coach at the College of Charleston from 2003 to 2012, retiring with a career total of 542 collegiate victories, making her one of only 31 Division I coaches to surpass the 500-win milestone. (Coker University)
