The City of Chicago Honors Michael Jordan with Special statue…
Chicago, IL – June 2, 2025 — The City of Chicago paid tribute to one of its greatest sports icons this week, honoring NBA legend Michael Jordan in a ceremony that drew fans, athletes, and dignitaries from across the country.
Held at the United Center — the arena where Jordan led the Chicago Bulls to six NBA championships — the event celebrated not only his legendary basketball career but also his lasting impact on the city and the world of sports. Mayor Brandon Johnson declared June 1st as Michael Jordan Day, calling it “a moment to honor a man who redefined greatness and put Chicago on the global sports map.”
The ceremony included the unveiling of a new mural near the United Center and the renaming of a downtown street to Michael Jordan Way, a permanent tribute to his legacy. Jordan, now 62, made a rare public appearance and expressed his gratitude.
“This city embraced me from the moment I arrived,” Jordan said. “Everything I achieved, I did with Chicago behind me. This honor means the world.”
Jordan, who was drafted by the Bulls in 1984, quickly became a global icon. His competitive spirit, unmatched talent, and leadership helped define an era of dominance in the 1990s. Beyond his six titles, five MVP awards, and countless records, Jordan helped elevate basketball into an international phenomenon.
Several former teammates and NBA stars attended the ceremony, including Scottie Pippen, Dennis Rodman, and current Bulls players. Music performances, video tributes, and a fireworks display capped off the celebration.
“Michael Jordan is not just a basketball player,” said longtime Bulls fan Angela Reyes. “He’s a part of our identity.”
With this tribute, Chicago cements its enduring bond with a legend whose name will forever be synonymous with greatness.
