For the time being, Tampa Bay will be without one of its best defensive end options.

Six games into the 2022 season, injuries have kept the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from playing to their full potential. The team’s defeat to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday afternoon—who hadn’t won a game in more than a month—made it painfully evident once more.

With safety Logan Ryan, safety Mike Edwards, and cornerback Sean Murphy-Bunting out for the Bucs, backup quarterback Mitch Trubisky shredded the defense in the fourth quarter. During Pittsburgh’s final two offensive drives, Trubisky completed four passes on third and long to seal the upset.

In recent weeks, Tampa Bay has been getting healthier. Having said that, at least one of the three defensive backs who missed time against the Steelers will still miss time.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports that Logan Ryan will have surgery on Wednesday to fix a Jones fracture in his foot. With the intention of returning late in the season, before the postseason, Ryan is anticipated to go on Injured Reserve.

The veteran first sustained the injury during Tampa Bay’s week four loss to Kansas City. He hasn’t played in the past two games as he considers his medical options. Ryan is anticipated to return to action in 2022 as opposed to sitting out the rest of the campaign due to the timing of the surgery.

In his four games with the Bucs, Ryan has racked up nine tackles, one interception, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery, and two pass deflections. Before coming to Tampa Bay, he was a member of the New England Patriots, Tennessee Titans, and New York Giants. Expect Keanu Neal, an offseason addition, to see more playing time at safety alongside Antoine Winfield Jr. while he is out. Neal finished the game against Pittsburgh with four tackles.
