Jordan Hicks is scheduled to make his field debut, which will be another milestone in his recovery from a terrifying injury scenario. The Vikings announced on Saturday that they had activated the veteran linebacker from injured reserve.

This week, Hicks resumed his practice following his recuperation from an emergency surgery resulting from a case of compartment syndrome. He missed six weeks of action due to the injury, which could have prevented him from playing the rest of the season. Hicks is now ready to take up his starting responsibilities at the second tier. Waiving Nick Vigil, who had covered for Hicks, freed up space on the roster.

Despite injuries to players like Kirk Cousins and Justin Jefferson, Minnesota has been able to maintain its playoff hopes. However, considering Hicks’ significance to the group, losing him also hurt the defense. The 31-year-old still has 87 tackles, which is third on the team, despite the lost time. In his second season with the Vikings, Hicks has added one interception, one sack, and a fumble that was recovered for a touchdown.

Prior to the deadline, the former third-round pick attracted trade interest, but the Vikings decided against taking a seller’s position. He will therefore stay on to finish the season, which will be a positive development for Minnesota’s defense. Despite the last moments of the Bengals game last week, that unit—and defensive coordinator  in particular—have received recognition for their performance.

Ivan Pace Jr. took on more of a workload at linebacker as a result of Hicks’ injury. Throughout the season, the undrafted rookie has made an impression, but particularly in the last four games, when he has recorded at least nine tackles. As the 7-7 team gets ready for the first of two games against the Lions in the final three weeks of the season, he and Hicks will try to maintain Minnesota’s postseason hopes. If Vigil clears waivers, he will be free to sign with the Vikings or any other team.
