Could Ex-Eagles OC Brian Johnson rejoin Shane Steichen with the Colts coaching staff?

Minnesota Vikings v Philadelphia Eagles

Brian Johnson, the former offensive coordinator for the Philadelphia Eagles, was fired earlier this week. Head coach Nick Sirianni is trying to get the once-prolific offense back on track after it hit a big slump in the latter part of the 2023 season.

We are aware that during the previous offseason, Indianapolis Colts head coach Shane Steichen made an effort to attract a few members of the Eagles assistant coaching staff to “Circle City.” But according to reports, Sirianni denied his requests.

“The IndyStar reports that Sirianni stated at the NFL Scouting Combine last year that there’s no doubt Shane (Steichen) wanted to take some guys there, but they’re coaches for the Philadelphia Eagles.” Keeping competent coaches in the building is my responsibility. That is the person who has a daily impact on the players and has the ability to improve them.

The question is whether Johnson, 36, was ever one of those Philly assistant coaches who Steichen desired before being elevated to the vacant former role of Eagles offensive coordinator for the Colts head coach.

Many organizations, including NFL head coaches and league general managers, are allegedly still interested in adding Johnson to their offensive coaching staff despite his recent firing.

Prior to taking over as the quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator for Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson at the University of Florida in 2020, Johnson was the quarterbacks coach for the Eagles in 2021–2022 under offensive coordinator Shane Steichen.

Although Johnson was partially to blame for the Eagles’ offensive problems, there are those who feel that the team as a whole, from Jalen Hurts’s late-season slump to Nick Sirianni’s rigid coaching style, was underperforming.

To be fair, the Colts don’t currently have a clear opening because Cam Turner is expected to stay as Indy’s quarterbacks coach and Jim Bob Cooter, the team’s current offensive coordinator, isn’t anticipated to be a top contender for the Eagles’ open offensive coordinator post. It seems sense that Johnson, who has even conducted interviews for a few NFL head coaching positions this cycle, could be able to gain more prominence as an offensive coach somewhere else.

That being said, the Colts might bring Johnson back to serve as a consultant for the Indianapolis offense in addition to their present lack of a passing game coordinator on the coaching staff—especially given Johnson’s close relationship with Steichen already their franchise quarterback hopeful Anthony Richardson.
