The 2024 U-17 World Cup schedule, results, and viewing instructions (in Spanish)
For the next three weeks, Indonesia will host the first U-17 World Cup since 2019. The quarterfinals will take place here without the participation of the United States or reigning champions England in the final eight.
The 15-year-old Nimfasha Berchimas’ brace helped the Baby Yanks defeat South Korea 3-1, and on Wednesday, they triumphed over Burkina Faso 2-1. However, they were forced to play Germany in the Round of 16 after losing 3-0 to France. Late in the game, despite a heroic effort, the Germans prevailed 3-2 thanks to a goal in the 87th minute.
TELEMUNDO DEPORTES and the TELEMUNDO APP will broadcast the 2024 U-17 WORLD CUP.
After a poor performance in 2019 that saw them lose in the group stage, the U.S. U-17s are back in the knockout round for their eighteenth appearance. The Baby Yanks’ best result came in 1999 when they finished fourth, but in two of the three previous events, they were unable to advance past the knockout stages.
Following the pandemic, the 2021 tournament in Peru was called off. Gonzalo Segares, a former Chicago Fire star and Costa Rican international, led the U.S. U-17 team into Group E, which included Burkina Faso, France, and South Korea.
In the Round of 16, when CONCACAF powers Mexico were destroyed by Mali, England, which had been dominating the competition up to that point, was shocked by Uzbekistan. The other two CONCACAF teams, Canada (0-0-3) and Panama (0-2-1), were unable to secure a victory and were eliminated in the group stage.
Stars to keep an eye on at the U-17 World Cup
The United States is home to 17 out of the 21 players on Segares’ roster; additional American players are on the rosters of Liverpool, Augsburg, Eintracht Frankfurt, and UE Cornelia.
Keyrol Figueroa is an important member of Segares’ American team. Keyrol, the Honduran star Maynor Figueroa’s son, led Liverpool’s U-18 Premier League team with four goals and three assists in 12 games last season. At the CONCACAF U-18 Championship, he scored seven goals, including one in the victory over Burkina Faso.
Nimfasha Berchimas, a 15-year-old reserve for Charlotte FC, has drawn attention with his two goals, including a brace in the first game’s victory over South Korea.
Remaining in CONCACAF, Fidel Barajas of Mexico plays regularly for Charleston Battery in the USL Championship and has represented both the Mexican U-17 team and the United States U-17 team.
Marc Guiu, a Spanish player, made his debut for Barcelona’s first team and became the team’s youngest goal scorer in La Liga. Similar to this, Germany’s Assan Ouedraogo plays for Schalke in the 2.Bundesliga, while Brazil’s Rayan made his debut and scored for Vasco da Gama. One of the most sought-after teenage football players in the world is Argentina’s Claudio Echeverri, who plays for River Plate.
England’s Jayden Meghoma has started just four games for Southampton’s first team, and Sam Amo-Ameyaw has been on the bench. Ishe Samuels-Smith of Chelsea is a player with a lot of potential. Joe Johnson of Luton has played for the Hatters in the League Cup this season, and Chris Rigg has established himself as a mainstay for Sunderland in the Championship. Ethan Nwaneri of Arsenal made his debut in the team last year.
