Scott Appleton played defensive tackle for the Texas Longhorns, the national champions. He was the best lineman in the nation, if not the best at that particular institution.

The time was 1 February 1964. The story that went viral throughout the county was, “Houston Oilers sign top draft pick Scott Appleton.”

He plays defensive tackle for the Texas Longhorns, the national champions. Pittsburgh wanted him too as he was the greatest lineman in the nation, possibly even the best at that particular school.

You see, the National Football League teams like the Steelers are engaged in a fierce talent-based competition with the Oilers and other American Football League teams.

When asked how high the bidding has gone for Appleton, who was born in central Texas. In response, an Oilers official asks, “Are you familiar with the Appleton Hilton?”

Bud Adams, the owner of the Oilers, did not give him one of those. But Appleton did accept a petrol station in addition to his pay and signing bonus. It was his father, Bud Adams, who controlled Phillips Petroleum and now controls an energy company. Appleton now has 38 animals and a cattle feed business!

What made Scott say that he preferred Houston to Pittsburgh?

It’s in Texas, and the money was roughly the same as well. I have a good deal of loyalty to the state,” UPI said.

Scott Appleton was able to take the proper turn thanks to Bud’s innovative offer.

Three years later, Appleton was traded even though he never made it big as a star.

His signing bonus will always be a peculiar yet real Houston sports legend.
