Following the announcement of Tom Brady’s four-game suspension, safety Devin McCourty of the New England Patriots stood by his teammate on Monday.
Devin McCourty, a safety for the New England Patriots, backed teammate Tom Brady on Monday following the NFL’s four-game suspension of Brady for his involvement in the Deflategate affair. Monday, five days following the publication of the Wells report, the NFL announced its punishment. According to the study, Brady was probably “at least generally aware” that game balls were being deflated by Patriots employees below league standards before New England defeated the Indianapolis Colts in the AFC championship.
Brady stated he “would never have someone do something that was outside the rules” and that he “didn’t alter the balls in any way” during a press conference in January. Brady was suspended by the league, along with the Patriots’ $1 million fine and loss of their 2016 and 2017 first-round draft picks. The league also fined the team for winning the Super Bowl.
Following a visit to a YMCA, McCourty spoke with the media, defending his highly successful teammate and restating owner Robert Kraft’s declaration of “unconditional support” for Brady.
