“Suni Lee, a member of the USA gymnastics team, has sadly been forced to withdraw from the 2024 Olympic competition due to…”

In 2023, the gymnast received a diagnosis of kidney disease that cannot be cured.

Suni Lee, the reigning all-around champion from the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, has secured her place in the 2024 Games in Paris alongside four other talented American gymnasts. Despite her triumph in 2021, her participation in a second Olympic Games was uncertain due to health challenges in the past year, including two forms of kidney disease.

In an interview with Hoda Kotb on TODAY that aired July 1, Lee expressed disbelief at her inclusion in the team, saying, “It feels completely unreal.” She reflected on moments of wanting to quit due to illness, finding it incredibly tough to stay motivated while others improved. “I couldn’t even get back to the gym,” the 21-year-old shared, often doubting herself throughout the challenging journey.

“After finding a supportive circle that uplifted me and ensured my well-being, I became certain that this path was my calling.”

“We never imagined I’d reach this point. Overcoming all the challenges and hurdles this week has been an incredibly tough yet rewarding journey.”

“Less than a year after her Tokyo victory, Lee confirmed her intention to compete in the 2024 Paris Games. However, her Olympic journey faced a setback when she was diagnosed with an incurable kidney disease in 2023.”

“After taking a break to prioritize her health, Lee resumed training with unwavering determination to secure her place on Team USA.”

In a 2023 Instagram post, she expressed that her return to elite gymnastics was not just about her comeback. It was a personal affirmation that she can conquer challenges and a hope to motivate others to pursue their dreams despite setbacks in life.

As we approach the Paris Olympics, let’s revisit Lee’s reflections on her physical and mental health journey in recent years.
