Details have been revealed regarding the Philadelphia Phillies’ decision to trade veteran left-handed reliever Gregory Soto.
The Philadelphia Phillies were notably busy before the 2024 MLB trade deadline. As one of the season’s top contenders, they aimed to strengthen several aspects of their team.
One area of focus was the bullpen. Through a series of trades, the Phillies made significant changes to their relief pitching corps.
The first player to be traded was Seranthony Dominguez, who joined the Baltimore Orioles as part of the deal for Austin Hays. Following that, the Phillies brought in Los Angeles Angels closer Carlos Estevez.
In two additional trades before the deadline, the Phillies swapped one left-handed reliever for another. They acquired Tanner Banks from the Chicago White Sox, which paved the way for another trade with the Orioles involving Gregory Soto.
Despite being a former All-Star closer with the Detroit Tigers, Soto didn’t regain his previous form during his time with the Phillies. Dave Dombrowski noted that the trade for Soto only happened because they were able to secure Banks.
“We wouldn’t have finalized the Soto trade if we hadn’t completed the deal for Banks first,” Dombrowski said, according to Matt Gelb of The Athletic.
While Dombrowski’s explanation suggests the trade for Soto was contingent on acquiring Banks, Soto and his representatives had been seeking a new environment for some time.
Early in the season, it became clear that Soto was seeking a change when he was brought in to pitch the eighth inning of a game with a six-run lead. He had a rough outing, getting only one out and giving up five runs, which led to a stern reprimand from manager Rob Thomson.
