The Philadelphia Phillies have built an eight-game lead in the National League East and are set to secure the division title soon. As a result, they are now focusing on the postseason.

If the season ended today, the Phillies would secure the top seed in the National League. While having this advantage is helpful in a competitive league, recent seasons have shown that home-field advantage doesn’t always guarantee success. However, playing more games at Citizens Bank Park would certainly be a plus.

For the Phillies, October is vital. They recognized the importance of this early on in Spring Training, and after 150 games, their performance in this final month will ultimately determine their season.

While key players like Bryce Harper and Trea Turner are expected to perform in critical moments, others, such as left-handed reliever Matt Strahm, also need to step up.

Jim Bowden of The Athletic has pointed out Strahm as a player to watch in October. At 32, he’s having his best season, boasting a 2.06 ERA and a 0.794 WHIP in a career-high 60 appearances. He’s struck out 69 batters while walking only 11 in 56 2/3 innings, with opposing hitters batting just .169 against his fastball and .129 against his slider.

General Manager Sam Fuld believes Matt Strahm has been undervalued despite being an All-Star, highlighting his versatility in facing both lefties and righties in any situation. “Strahm is that guy for us. While he might not fit the typical ‘under-the-radar’ label as an All-Star, he’s an underappreciated player who competes fiercely and wants the ball.”

With a 2.06 ERA, 2.50 FIP, and 198 ERA+, Strahm will be crucial in key moments during the upcoming postseason.
