Travis Kelce has become the all-time receptions leader for the Kansas City Chiefs.
Travis Kelce became the Kansas City Chiefs’ all-time leader in receptions on Sunday, surpassing Tony Gonzalez with his second catch against the Los Angeles Chargers.
The nine-time Pro Bowl tight end made a 38-yard reception on the Chiefs’ opening drive, tying Gonzalez’s record of 916 catches, which he set during his 12 seasons from 1997 to 2008. Kelce then caught a 5-yard pass from Patrick Mahomes on the Chiefs’ fourth drive to claim the record early in his own 12th season with the team.
Taylor Swift was not present at SoFi Stadium to witness the 34-year-old Kelce’s milestone, who now ranks fourth in NFL history for receptions by a tight end. He trails only Gonzalez—who finished with 1,325 catches after playing five seasons with Atlanta—and Jason Witten and Antonio Gates.
Kelce had a slow statistical start this season, with just eight catches for 69 yards over the first three games, partly due to increased attention from opposing defenses, as noted by Mahomes.
With top receiver Rashee Rice suffering a knee injury in a collision with Mahomes during an interception return, Kelce may need to step up even more in the offense. The play was initiated by Mahomes overthrown pass to Kelce, which led to the interception by Kristian Fulton.
As Kelce approaches his 35th birthday this Saturday, he is also nearing two more franchise records. He has 74 touchdown receptions, just three shy of Gonzalez’s 77, and his total of 77 touchdowns is seven behind Priest Holmes’ Chiefs record of 84.
