Lions quarterback Jared Goff made NFL history on Monday night by completing every pass he attempted, but his standout moment might have been catching a pass himself. In a trick play dubbed “Alcatraz,” wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown threw a touchdown pass to Goff in the end zone.
Goff mentioned that, to his recollection, this was the first time he had ever caught a touchdown pass at any level—dating back to when he was seven. “I think that’s my first one ever,” he said. Goff noted that he and St. Brown had practiced this play for a couple of years, but the right game scenario had never presented itself until now.
“We’ve had this play for a long time, but it’s never been the right situation. We called it before, but I usually back out if it’s not the right look. This time, it was.”
Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson created the play and named it “Alcatraz,” though Goff admits he doesn’t know the reason behind the name. “Ben’s been calling it Alcatraz for two or three years now, and I’ve never asked him why. I probably should,” Goff remarked.
This marked the second straight game where the Lions scored a touchdown from a trick play, following a hook and ladder the previous week. Goff mentioned that while trick plays are often in the game plan, they require the right circumstances to be executed. “The hook and ladder was one, and so was Alcatraz,” he noted.
