On a recent episode of the “Hoop Collective Podcast,” ESPN’s Brian Windhorst and Tim Bontemps talked about the Lakers’ continued interest in possibly trading for Jonas Valanciunas later in the season, even after his recent signing with the Washington Wizards.

Windhorst asked Bontemps and cohost Tim MacMahon about the chances of Valanciunas becoming available from the Wizards during the season, suggesting he could eventually join the Lakers this year.

Bontemps agreed, noting there’s a solid possibility that Valanciunas could end up with the Lakers or another team instead of Washington.

Although Valanciunas is expected to be a starter for the Wizards this season, his veteran experience could make him a more attractive option for a championship-contending team like the Lakers, especially given the Wizards’ likely struggles as they look toward the competitive 2025 NBA Draft.

Last season, Valanciunas played all 82 games for the New Orleans Pelicans, averaging 12.2 points, 8.8 rebounds, 2.1 assists, and 0.8 blocks per game, with shooting splits of .559/.308/.785.

So far in free agency, the Lakers have missed out on their targeted signings, including DeMar DeRozan, who opted for the Sacramento Kings, and Klay Thompson, who signed with the Dallas Mavericks after leaving the Golden State Warriors. Meanwhile, Valanciunas, a veteran center recognized for his defensive skills and three-point shooting, signed a surprising three-year deal with the Washington Wizards.

Los Angeles has re-signed LeBron James and Max Christie from their own free agents but has not yet made any new signings from outside the team. They have also seen Taurean Prince and Spencer Dinwiddie leave for minimum deals with other teams in free agency.
