If Lionel Messi and his Argentina colleagues make it to the Copa America event final the following summer, they won’t have far to travel. The 107-year competition, which is among the most famous and oldest in the world, will have its final match on July 14 at Miami Gardens’ Hard Rock Stadium, according to a Monday announcement from the organizers. The first game will take place in Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium on June 20. The ten South American national teams—Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, and Venezuela—compete in the quadrennial Copa America competition.

Usually hosted in South America, it will now take place in the United States in 2024 thanks to a strategic alliance between CONMEBOL, the regional soccer organization for South America, and CONCACAF, the regional association for North, Central, and the Caribbean, both of which are headquartered in Miami. The current Nations League campaign will determine which six CONCACAF countries make the field. The top contenders for a slot are the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

Alejandro Domínguez, the president of CONMEBOL, stated, “We expect stadiums filled with the passion of the entire American continent for the inauguration and final of an unforgettable CONMEBOL Copa America.” “The ball will start rolling in Atlanta and not stop until the last game in Miami, which is one month away. These are fantastic stadiums located in amazing cities. We appreciate the invaluable assistance in organizing this competition provided by the US government and our partners in CONCACAF.

The group stage draw will be at the James L. Knight Center in downtown Miami on December 7 at 7:30 p.m. FIFA ranking will be used to determine team seeding. The most recent proof that South Florida has emerged as one of the hubs of international soccer is the choice of Miami to host the Copa America final. The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner and World Cup victor, Messi, signed a contract with Inter Miami in July. The FIFA headquarters are located in Coral Gables and will accommodate 300 staff. Meanwhile, the CONCACAF headquarters are located in downtown Miami. Additionally, Wynwood hosted Soccerex, a global soccer conference with 2,000 delegates, last week.

Tom Garfinkel, Vice Chairman, President, and CEO of the Miami Dolphins and Hard Rock Stadium, stated, “We are proud to host the CONMEBOL Copa America 2024 final at Hard Rock Stadium.” “As a premier worldwide entertainment hub, we aim to capture Miami’s vibrant, multicultural culture. Many parties, including Stephen Ross, CONCACAF, CONMEBOL, and our local and federal politicians, worked together to make this choice. We can’t wait to give players and spectators alike an amazing, world-class experience and to celebrate football’s fervor in our neighborhood.

Copa America 2024 will function as a sort of trial run for the U.S. host cities of the World Cup in 2026, which the United States, Mexico, and Canada are co-hosting. Copa America’s scheduling, which falls in the middle of the World Cup cycle, offers participating teams top-notch international competition, just like Euro 2024 will for European national teams. “I applaud both cities and their sports commissions; Atlanta and Miami will make fantastic hosts for these marquee games. The two locations are of the highest caliber, and the cities are known for their ardent football and sports supporters who support important events,” stated FIFA Vice President and CONCACAF President Victor Montagliani.

Copa America’s most recent visit to the US took place during the event’s unique 100-year centenary celebration in the summer of 2016. The only other occasion it was kept off South American territory happened at that time. Four CONMEBOL guest women’s national teams will play in the inaugural CONCACAF W Gold Cup in February and March 2024 as part of the recent CONMEBOL and CONCACAF agreement, which aims to improve soccer in both regions.
