Jonathan Quick of the Rangers exceeded expectations.
The majority of fans were worried when Jonathan Quick was signed by the New York Rangers to replace Igor Shesterkin as their backup goalie because Quick’s best playing days were clearly behind him, as shown by his recent play over the previous few seasons. In the playoffs, the Vegas Golden Knights even chose to start Adin Hill over him, and that decision helped them win the Stanley Cup.
Entering the regular season, fans had little faith in Quick following a poor preseason performance. He made a strong impression on the Seattle Kraken during his first start of the season, and he has continued to play well, establishing himself as one of the NHL’s top backup goaltenders thus far this year.
Absence of Regulation Losses
Quick has not lost a regulation game for the Rangers as of this writing. In addition to his 5-0-1 record, he has already this season recorded two shutouts. Out of all the goalies in the league who have appeared in six or more games, he currently has the best goals-against average and save percentage. After observing Quick’s play over the previous few seasons and witnessing his struggles in the preseason, this start was completely unexpected. The 2017–18 season was his last season with a save percentage above.920, and the 2021–22 season was his last season with a save percentage of at least.910. Ignoring his numbers from his brief time in Vegas, Quick had a poor run of seasons in his last few with the Los Angeles Kings. He had a save percentage below.900 in three of his previous five seasons with the team, with his lowest being.876 the previous campaign.
It’s been incredible to watch Quick’s comeback after facing so many obstacles in the previous seasons. He is outperforming the Rangers’ top goalie thus far this season, and he looks like the player he was when he helped the Kings win two Stanley Cups. The Rangers are making the most of their backup right now, even though this playing style may not last the entire season. To win games in the NHL, you need your backup, and Quick has been doing that the entire season.
Acted Concerning Shesterkin Injury
Quick took over as the starter after Shesterkin sustained an injury and continued to play well. During that time, he participated in three games, winning two of them and losing the third in a shootout. He continued to make 35 saves to keep the Rangers in the game despite the shootout loss and gave them a chance to at least earn a point. Additionally, he made crucial stops when the team overcame the Columbus Blue Jackets to tie the game in the closing minutes, and Quick went on to make the saves in the shootout to seal the victory. When Shesterkin was out, the Rangers gained vital points, and part of the reason they won those games was Quick’s excellent play.
