As Tommy DeVito mania grows, hundreds of New York Giants swarm the neighborhood sandwich shop.

Tommy DeVito, the rookie quarterback for the New York Giants, is gaining a dedicated following that is beginning to resemble the fervor that once surrounded former Knicks player Jeremy Lin.

Many New Yorkers have happy memories of the crazy period in the history of local sports known as “Lin-sanity.” A little more than ten years ago, the Harvard undrafted talent stunned the state with one of the most exciting and surprising 35-game runs in Knicks history.

During a low point in the Knicks 2011–12 season, the guard proved to be a clutch player and scorer, which energized the fan base. It’s a time in New York sports history that evokes fond memories of a charming underdog tale. It appears that a similar sentiment has been building among Giants fans in recent weeks.

After backup quarterback Tyrod Taylor was forced out of the game in the first quarter of Week 8’s big game against the Jets due to injury, rookie quarterback Tommy DeVito was thrust into the starting QB role. The coaching staff only allowed DeVito to toss the ball seven times in his forgettable regular season debut, where the 25-year-old recorded -1 passing yards, due to his inexperience and the bad weather.

The quarterback performed better the next week, connecting on 15 of his 20 passes for 175 yards in a crushing defeat to the Raiders. In Week 10, the Cowboys destroyed the team once more, this time by a score of 49-17. But with both Jones and Taylor out of the picture, DeVito continued to show that he could be a reliable starter for the remainder of the campaign.

Nevertheless, in two consecutive victories for Big Blue over the past two weeks, the Livingston, New Jersey native has shown himself to be far more than competent. He has four touchdowns and 437 passing yards in his last two games, but more significantly, he has not thrown an interception.
