Michigan offensive lineman Zak Zinter is in surgery; his mother’s message.
Zak Zinter, an offensive lineman for Michigan, underwent emergency surgery in Ann Arbor on Saturday night to fix a leg injury he sustained during the Wolverines’ 30–24 victory over Ohio State.
The starting right guard was “headed into surgery now,” according to his mother, Tiffany Zinter posted on social media on Saturday night. He had fractures to his tibia and fibula.
Zinter went on, “Please pray for Zak’s surgeons, the surgery, a full recovery, and for him to comprehend the injury.”
The injury occurred towards the end of the third quarter of Saturday’s match for the 6-foot-6, 322-pound lineman. He gave the Michigan Stadium crowd a thumbs up before he had to be carted off the field. Because of how horrific the injury was, FOX chose not to show it again during the game broadcast.
Following one play, Michigan’s Blake Corum, a running back, scored a touchdown on a 22-yard run, putting the Wolverines ahead 24–17. Karsen Barnhart, the backup tackle, switched to guard for the rest of the game, and Trente Jone moved to right tackle.
Tiffany Zinter claimed that while her son was in the emergency room, Michigan players had video-called him after the game.
Zinter went on, “On the plus side, he’s 3-0 against OSU! This is a brotherhood and a TEAM!
Zinter has been a four-year starter for Michigan, where he was a member of two offensive lines that won the Joe Moore Award and was selected twice for the Big Ten team. He was regarded as one of the best guards available in the NFL draft the following year when he decided to return for his senior year.
Sherrone Moore, the offensive line coach and acting head coach at Michigan, stated, “You don’t want to see them get hurt in any way when you’re around the player for four years, and you’re just around all these guys in general.” Seeing a child of his caliber both on and off the field was difficult.
However, I just got off the phone with his mother, so hopefully we have some good news. He will eventually recover and be prepared to continue.
