Lions' David Montgomery takes important step towards Week 10 return from rib injury

Throughout the 2023 season, the Detroit Lions’ pass rush has produced a variety of outcomes. James Houston, one of the group’s top producers a year ago, has missed all but two of the team’s games. Houston had a lot of hope going into the season, but he has missed the majority of it due to an injury. Still, a comeback for the Jackson State product might be imminent. He told reporters on Wednesday that he plans to return before the NFL playoffs begin.

He claimed to be in “the last quarter” of his recovery. Making sure his health is in order before he goes back on the field is the main priority. When it counts most, Houston wants to contribute and support his teammates. Luckily for him, his health is cooperating with a chance to make a comeback before the postseason. Playing before games turn into win-or-go-home situations is essential to his recovery from the demands of playing in an NFL game.

“It’s extremely important just so I can get my feet under me, get a couple games before,” Houston stated. “In the postseason, the play is even more difficult and elevated. Many of the guys here, I know, have probably not played in many games, but those who have told me that playoff games are a completely different animal. Thus, you must be able to improve yourself.”

The second-year defender has rested most of the season, but by not playing, he has been able to maintain his fitness for the crucial stretch that lies ahead. The Lions will get a healthy version of him when he returns, similar to how he was feeling at the start of the season.

“The real trade-off is that. “Everyone else has experienced it and has kind of received bumps and nicks or finds it painful to wake up in the morning,” said Houston. “I’m good for myself. I’m really new. Right now, I feel like I’m getting ready for the season. I’m hoping to be in top form and prepared for another camp by the time I’m ready to leave.”
