A former top 150 recruit who spent two seasons at Florida has accepted an offer from Auburn.

The Florida Gators were the home team of defensive lineman Chris McClellan during his first two collegiate football seasons.

McClellan was rated by 247Sports composite rankings as the 113th best player in the 2022 class. McClellan was offered a chance to drop out of high school by Auburn, but he naturally chose to go to the swamp.

The six-foot-three, 320-pound defensive lineman made his announcement recently that he is signing with teams through the transfer portal, and Auburn was among the first to make an offer to him.

Two reasons McClellan left Florida, according to a source, were to find a better development facility and a facility with a strong strength and conditioning program.

Auburn can accomplish both of those goals for McClellan, so it makes sense that Coach Freeze extended an offer so quickly.

McClellan finished the previous season with 23 tackles and a half sack for the Gators. McClellan has two total sacks in his career, with 1.5 coming in 2022. On PFF, he earned a 63.7 grade for the Gators in the previous season.

Auburn will target the defensive line in the portal, so McClellan looks like a great fit for this team.

If Coach Freeze is successful in getting him on campus, the Tigers should be able to sign this enormous defensive lineman.

In 2021, Marquise Gilbert was ranked as the top JUCO safety. He made the decision to join the Auburn Tigers in the SEC. Gilbert has made the decision to enter the transfer portal after spending a few seasons with the Tigers.

Gilbert played 42 snaps for the Tigers this season and made three appearances, scoring a 54.9 on PFF.

Gilbert’s departure is painful for Auburn’s depth concerns because the team will need assistance at the secondary position, where many players are heading to the NFL. Although Auburn will search the transfer portal extensively for backup players, the secondary will be young the following year.

It will be interesting to see where Gilbert ends up and how he performs for that team the following season because he never got enough playing time for us to know what kind of player he really was. Gilbert was a depth piece, but you have to hate to see this secondary getting thinner.

For the upcoming season, defensive backfield depth must be added, so Coach Freeze and his staff must hit the portal hard. I wish Gilbert the best of luck in his search for a new residence.
