The Detroit Lions got off to a quick start this season, in large part thanks to Aidan Hutchinson.
To Hutchinson and the rest of Detroit’s struggling defense, that seems like a long time ago.
The NFC North-leading Lions fell to the last-place Chicago Bears, 28-13, on Sunday after giving up 18 straight points in the second half of the game. Hutchinson was involved in another Bears touchdown early in the fourth quarter after he jumped offside on a crucial play at the end of the third quarter.
Once a popular choice for the Super Bowl, Detroit (9-4) has lost its last seven games, falling to 4-3. It has given up 28.7 points per game over this difficult stretch.
After recording one of Detroit’s three sacks against Chicago, defensive end John Cominsky said, “I feel like we kind of lost our swagger and our confidence.” I believe that we were playing our best ball when we had that swagger, that confidence, and the guys were loose.
“Therefore, it is imperative to prioritize maintaining discipline this week while simultaneously regaining confidence and swagger.”
With Hutchinson as the second overall pick in the 2022 draft, that will probably start with him. After recording 4 1/2 sacks in the first five weeks of the season, the 23-year-old defensive end has only had two sacks in the last eight games, both of which came against Chicago.
On November 19, Hutchinson contributed to Detroit’s thrilling 31-26 victory over Chicago by strip-sacking Justin Fields, which led to a safety in the dying seconds of the game. However, he committed two egregious errors in the rematch.
Hutchinson jumped offside on a hard count late in the third quarter with Chicago facing a fourth-and-13. The Bears led 19–13 after Fields capitalized on the free play by finding DJ Moore for a 38-yard touchdown pass.
That was only a brief error in judgment, Hutchinson said. “I was horrified by that play. I believe that play simply altered the game’s momentum, and I take responsibility for that.
After the defeat, Hutchinson was obviously angry with himself, but Cominsky immediately jumped to his defense.

“We’re going to eat that, all 11 of us, because Hutch has been such a good rusher for us,” he declared. As a team, we must support Hutch and keep him up because he is abusing himself.
After a disastrous exchange between Jared Goff and Graham Glasgow, who took over at center with Frank Ragnow out due to a knee injury, Detroit promptly gave the ball back to Chicago. The Bears were deep in Lions territory when the fumble occurred.
Hutchinson called a trick and moved inside on third-and-goal at the eleven, creating a huge opening on the right side of the field. With incredible speed, Fields made his way to the open area and eventually reached the end zone corner for the touchdown.
It’s kind of vulnerable, the edge, and when the (offensive line) slides to you, it’s not a good one, Hutchinson said. “It’s just the nature of the game; you make decisions in it that you believe to be correct. It’s the cost of taking everything completely risky.
In its first game back since placing Alim McNeill on injured reserve on Tuesday due to a knee injury, Detroit gave up 142 yards of rushes. The best interior defensive lineman on the team, McNeill, has a career-high five sacks this season in addition to 31 tackles.
“I am fully aware of who we are. We’re a fighting team, said Lions head coach Dan Campbell. “We have to do things correctly because even the smallest error can throw us off now, man. We simply are that kind of team. But this place has plenty. We had an abundance. We carry out tasks correctly. We’re not too bad at all. Man, we’ll get it cleaned up. We’ll go on.
