The Patriots and Belichick? Says Irvin, “Let Him Go”

FRISCO – Dallas Cowboys legend Michael Irvin has firsthand experience with the agonizing split that can occur when an organization loses a successful coach; in fact, “The Playmaker” still feels the pain of Jimmy Johnson’s notorious 1994 divorce from Cowboys owner Jerry Jones.

Then the New England Patriots and their relationship with Bill Belichick arrive, and Irvin believes it’s time for yet another traumatic divorce. This week, while analyzing New England’s 3-10 campaign, Irvin stated on FS1, “I think it’s best for both parties to go their separate ways.” “You take Bill Belichick’s assets and give him to someone else. You have the opportunity to begin with something.”

Irvin is well aware of how difficult the “assets” portion of this is. Belichick is still a coach at heart. And even after his team’s four-year decline in the post-Tom Brady era, he will still be highly sought after.

Would the Commanders, Panthers, Chargers, or any other team—not the Cowboys, despite absurd rumors—genuinely want to “trade” for the coach, though?

One consequence of that is that, should the team give up a first-round pick as is rumored, Belichick would be joining a team that would be even harder to rebuild.

Would 71-year-old Belichick rather be let go, negating the need for a trade? Will he have the same level of power on a new team as he did during his twenty-four-year tenure in Foxboro? Is he truly a cure-all for a failing franchise? We do not possess those responses. But what if Belichick is done playing for the Patriots? In that case, Michael Irvin most likely has the right response.
