Gators Security Objective Gregory Smith III Postpones the Date of Commitment

Gregory Smith III, a safety at Sumner High School, will require an additional week to consider his options before deciding on a college residence. The safety target for the Gators decided on Tuesday to postpone his commitment from Wednesday to Early Signing Day on December 20. Smith will select from Florida, Ole Miss, Toldeo Vanderbilt, Virginia, and USF, the six previously named universities.

“After conversing with my family, I’ve decided to push my commitment day to December 20th, which is also signing day!!” Smith stated on X, the website that used to be known as Twitter. Smith, who spent his prep career mostly at quarterback, has experienced a late surge in his recruiting after making his debut in the safety rotation this senior year.

The Riverview, Florida native, who stands 6-foot-4 and weighs 200 pounds, has a promising build that goes along with length, speed, and useful ball skills to position him as a versatile backend prospect. He is comparable in size to Jordan Castell, a freshman safety who started 11 games for Florida in 2023. During his senior year, Smith’s size helped him adjust to the defensive side of the ball. He recorded 29 tackles, one for loss, four pass breakups, one interception, and one fumble recovery.

Since head coach Billy Napier and the UF staff made the offer to Smith on October 5, the Gators have been regarded as the front-runner in Smith’s locker room. But, Smith is taking his time before deciding where to continue his football career after the team’s secondary saw a coaching change that included the addition of Will Harris in place of Corey Raymond.

In the 2024 cycle, Florida has committed three players to the defensive backfield, including five-star safety prospect Xavier Filsaime, safety Josiah Davis, and cornerback Teddy Foster.
