Boston — The additions of Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis to the Celtics’ roster during the offseason are the main points of interest.
The Celtics have been able to expand even with the significant contributions from both players and the addition of Sam Cassell to the coaching staff.
As he navigates his second season in Boston as head coach, Joe Mazzulla has expressed gratitude for Cassell’s nuanced perspective on the coaching staff.
“The experience is one of the blessings of having a guy like him,” Mazzulla said to media prior to Tuesday’s game. He can reach out and touch each bench seat. He has worked with some of the top coaches.
Mazzulla is aware that although Cassell has grown in his new role as coach, he still has a lot of playing experience—he won a championship with the Celtics in 2008, among other things.
Mazzulla said, “He’s been a starting point guard.” He has performed a role. He usually enters the game toward the end as a third-string player. He’s literally experienced every scenario you could imagine while coaching and competing in the NBA. He’s more of a sounding board, in my opinion. In addition to talking a lot, he enjoys listening. A truly wonderful gift is the ability to listen to everyone.
