Aidan Hutchinson, a defensive end for the Detroit Lions, did not hesitate to accept responsibility for his call of a stunt in Week 14 that let Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields run for a touchdown. Instead of maintaining containment on a third down rush, the second-year pass-rusher decided to call a stunt. Fields quickly scrambled to the edge without fear of containment and ran for a score as a result. During his postgame media availability, Hutchinson accepted responsibility for the error, and defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn and head coach Dan Campbell both continue to have faith in the defender.

Glenn claimed to comprehend the defender’s method of reaching a decision. The Bears had slid their pass protection toward Hutchinson throughout the game. Hutchinson decided to give a call that he thought would be successful.

“There are opportunities for our players to make calls within the call because we believe in our players and they’re smart players,” Glenn stated. “One thing that frequently occurred in that game was their sliding to Hutch. Hutch went out to try and capitalize on that particular play. It was third-and-11, and he was attempting to reach the quarterback, as all defensive linemen enjoy doing.”

But over the course of his career, the Lions think he will make more plays than errors. Glenn is keeping the young payer accountable, but he is not letting these setbacks get to him. “When you’re the second pick in the Draft, when you come in and have the success he’s had, the thing that comes with that is expectations and criticism,” Glenn said. Thus, he is indifferent. You know how people say you work for them, that it’s your responsibility to force him to go here and there? Well, he’s not, and he won’t be around forever, and I always discuss that with him.

“It’s a requirement of the job as a former player. However, take note: that player has contributed numerous plays for us, and everyone is focused on him because of that. Glenn added, “Listen, it was an error, he accepted responsibility, and we’re moving on. “I want him to know that and act accordingly because despite his mistakes, he still produced a great deal of plays for us. I try to get him to concentrate on those things rather than his errors.”
