The college football community was greatly alarmed when Alabama, the undefeated Florida State, was placed ahead of Florida State in the College Football Playoff selection committee’s field of four. Additionally, it provided politicians with an opportunity to boast.

Among them was U.S. Senator Rick Scott (R-FL). Scott demanded information from CFP executive director Bill Hancock regarding FSU’s exclusion in a letter he sent to selection committee chair Boo Corrigan. Hancock responded on Friday, and Scott quickly shared it on social media.

Hancock provided two justifications for the Seminoles’ exclusion in the letter. He mentioned the selection protocol used by the committee and advised Scott to review it.

According to protocol, the Committee must consider how a team’s postseason performance might be impacted by the absence of important players, according to Hancock. Put simply, without its standout quarterback, Florida State is a different team. The Committee became convinced that four teams deserved to be ranked higher than FSU as a result of that.

Against North Alabama, Seminole quarterback Jordan Travis sustained a leg injury that ended his season. FSU was still able to triumph despite his absence, defeating Louisville in the ACC championship game.

Hancock wrote in his letter, “FSU’s strength of schedule was not as strong as the four teams that were ranked ahead of them.” “Strength of schedule is a critical metric the Committee considers, as I’m sure you are aware. Had our protocol allowed for undefeated records regardless of a team’s strength of schedule, other universities would have consistently been given consideration.

Hancock continued by mentioning that FSU was one of the eight unbeaten teams that did not advance to the championship game. He insisted that the final four teams were the correct four.

“Every member of the Committee is aware of the disappointment experienced by Florida State supporters,” Hancock stated. “We understand that some fans would be disappointed in the choice that was made. Only four of the more than four very good teams that were vying for four playoff spots this year were able to advance.

Even after sharing the letter on social media on Friday, Scott was still not happy with the decision. He responded by stating unequivocally that he is familiar with how to use the shift key on his device.

Scott remarked, “Still NO TRANSPARENCY,” in reference to the letter outlining the steps he had doubted. “Without Jordan Travis, Florida State was ranked #4 before defeating Louisville, ranked #14… However, FSU, the CFP things, is a weaker team now that they have won.
