A player from the Pittsburgh Steelers practice squad was cut by the team on Sunday, just hours after he was accused of assaulting his girlfriend by the police.

Following an altercation at their apartment in the Crawford-Roberts neighborhood of the city at around eight in the morning, Tariq M. Carpenter, 24, allegedly threw his live-in girlfriend to the ground and restrained her against her will, according to Pittsburgh police.

A criminal complaint states that Carpenter is 6 feet 4 inches and 220 pounds, while his girlfriend is 5 feet 6 inches and 115 pounds.

The Steelers declared on Twitter three hours later that the linebacker had been released. The Steelers didn’t offer any more details.

A Pittsburgh police spokeswoman named Emily Bourne verified that the man being held was the former Steelers player.

According to the police, Carpenter’s girlfriend was the target of allegations that led to an argument. According to the complaint, Carpenter became enraged, pulled her out of bed, and threw her to the ground, hurting her shoulder. According to the police, he then restrained her and wouldn’t let her go.

Carpenter’s girlfriend allegedly scratched his face during their altercation.

According to police, she used her cell phone to call 911, but Carpetner took the phone and hung up.

When police arrived, they discovered the apartment was in a mess. According to the complaint, Carpenter initially told police that he was the victim but later acknowledged hanging up the phone. Carpenter’s account was deemed “vague and non-descript” by the police.

Carpenter was arrested and charged with simple assault. He appeared in City Court on January 4 for a preliminary hearing after being charged on Sunday night.

Carpenter, a native of Georgia, was selected in the seventh round by the Green Bay Packers last year after being selected out of Georgia Tech. Prior to the Steelers’ opening game of the season, he signed on to the practice squad.
