New York Giants Injury Update: Brightwell, Peart Designated for Return

Coach Brian Daboll said before practice on Wednesday that offensive tackle Matt Peart and running back Gary Brightwell had been assigned for returns as the Giants prepare for their game in Philadelphia on Monday.

The Giants have 21 days to activate both players from injured reserve to the 53-man roster. They can now both practice.

Due to a shoulder injury, Peart, a 2020 third-round draft pick, hasn’t played since Week 5 at Miami. Over the course of four seasons, he has made 40 appearances, five at left tackle and one at right tackle.

Meanwhile, Brightwell’s hamstring injury has prevented him from playing since Week 7 against Washington. Brightwell was selected in the sixth round of the 2021 NFL Draft and has played in 37 games, accumulating 256 yards from scrimmage and one rushing touchdown. Additionally, in 2022, he returned 26 kickoffs for 555 yards at an average of 21.3 yards.

There is conjecture circulating that the New York Giants, who are expected to choose in the top 10 of the NFL draft, may use their first-round pick to select the successor of tight end Darren Waller.

A product from Georgia Several draft boards predict Brock Bowers will be among the top 10. The prospect is compared to George Kittle by Bleacher Report, suggesting that he has the potential to be a game-changing addition to any offense that signs him.
Some may find it outrageous that Waller was cut after just one season with the Giants. But the Giants should think about selecting his replacement in 2024 given his persistent hamstring ailment, which sidelined him for a month, and his poor on-field performance.

“It’s okay that Bowers isn’t built like a traditional Y tight end,” the NFL Scouting Department of Bleacher Report said. “His athletic abilities more than compensate for his less-than-ideal size. When he has the ball in his hands, Bowers is a very unique player who can change any passing game in an instant.

Waller was expected to be quarterback Daniel Jones’ primary receiving target and a deadly red zone threat going into this season after the Giants acquired him for a third-round choice last offseason.

But given the extreme danger involved in relying on the 30-year-old to be healthy the entire season, those hopes may have been unrealistic. Waller has also failed to score scores at the rate they had hoped for; in nine games this season, he has only tallied one receiving touchdown, which would be the fewest in a season in which he has played at least nine games.
