Know Your Buckeyes: Breaking down the somewhat new-look Ohio State offense - Land-Grant Holy Land

Ryan Day of Ohio State shows how a new recruit might be the “best receiver in the country.”

Ohio State football had a great Early Signing Day this past Wednesday, and they are assembling another outstanding recruiting class. Naturally, the star of the show is a talented wide receiver. While Jeremiah Smith, the 2024 class’s top-ranked player overall, is making all the news, head coach Ryan Day claims there is another newcomer with exceptional potential.

You may need to look a little farther into the prospect rankings if you’re attempting to figure out who he is talking about. Damarion Witten of On3 claims he is a three-star tight end prospect.

Day quoted Witten’s former coaches as saying, “This kid is special, you know, and he can be the best receiver in the country,” while he was being recruited. “And you kind of back off when he said that, but you’re seeing exactly what he’s talking about.”

The new freshman at Cleveland, Ohio’s Glenville High School stood out due to his size and athleticism. Moving ahead, he can provide the Buckeyes with tempting red-zone and 50-50 ball options. Witten placed just within the Top 30 tight end prospects, so he figures to be a little raw right away, but the talent is there.

In June, Witten made Ohio State his official college commitment by signing the letter of intent. Despite the harsh criticism directed at him after Ohio State football’s consecutive defeat to Michigan, Ryan Day and the team have a fantastic opportunity to turn things around next season. Fans have a lot of reasons to cheer for the Buckeyes thanks to the additions of Jeremiah Smith and Damarion Witten.
