Good News: Eventually, 49ers Star Player Accepted Signing An Extended Contract.
Although Joseph-Day isn’t much of a pass rusher, he can cover the run well, which makes him a suitable Arik Armstead substitute.
According to Jason McCourty of The NFL Network, the 49ers signed veteran defensive tackle Sebastian Joseph-Day on Tuesday. Even at 28, Joseph-Day is quite young. Having started 68 NFL games, including 14 this season for the Chargers, who strangely released him four days ago, he was a former captain. Who knows what the Chargers are doing? They recently fired their head coach as well.
Regardless of the Chargers’ reasoning for Joseph-Day’s release, the 49ers win from it since they now have a defensive lineman of the highest caliber, capable of starting in place of Arik Armstead until his foot heals from plantar fasciitis, whenever that may be.
He might be out for the remainder of the regular season. Given that Joseph-Day has been a starter his whole career and that other teams were probably interested in signing him before the 49ers signed him, it seems doubtful that he would sign with them as a backup. Perhaps he is more informed than we are about Armstead’s injury.
Javon Kinlaw, the 49ers’ starting defensive tackle, has performed admirably in Armstead’s absence. However, he’s more suited to start and play fewer than 45 snaps per game this season and come off the bench to play 20 to 25 snaps. Sebastian-Day’s signing enables Kinlaw to resume his rotating position, which has shown to be quite beneficial for him.
While Joseph-Day isn’t much of a pass rusher, he can cover the run well, which makes him an excellent Armstead substitute.
