Former Cardinals CB Marco Wilson claimed by Patriots

With the addition of former fourth-round pick Marco Wilson, the New England Patriots have increased the depth of their cornerback corps.

According to a report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the New England Patriots have added to their cornerback depth by claiming former Arizona Cardinals fourth-round pick Marco Wilson off waivers.

After just three seasons in the NFL, Wilson, the former Florida Gator, was cut by the Cardinals on Tuesday. He had a decline this season after having a strong career debut in 26 games across his first two seasons, making 106 tackles, two for a loss, 14 passes defended, and three interceptions.

Wilson’s efficacy with the Cardinals fell off sharply this year after a strong showing in his second season, when he allowed just 546 yards in coverage while giving up a 57.5 completion %. In 11 starts, Wilson’s yards allowed and completion % reached career highs of 73.4 percent and 727 yards, respectively.

Wilson’s dismissal finally occurred as a result of this downturn, as he did not play a defensive snap in the Cardinals’ final four games. Now, he becomes a part of an injured Patriots cornerback group.
LaMichael Pettaway is joining the Patriots practice squad, according to a report from Aaron Wilson of KPRC. This fills one of the four vacancies on the team’s scouting roster.

What Marco Wilson, Rhamondre Stevenson moves mean for the Patriots - Pats Pulpit

The 26-year-old has already made two free agent visits to the Pats, the first in July 2022 and the second in November 2023. Pettway played three seasons at Arkansas under former Patriots assistant Bret Bielema from 2015 to 2018, when he started his collegiate career. In his senior year of college, he participated in 13 games (10 starts) at Iowa, where he caught 55 passes for 676 yards and six touchdowns, good for Honorable Mention All-Big 12 status.

After that, Pettaway spent two seasons in the USFL. The 6-2, 223-pound tight end was most recently a member of the USFL Birmingham Stallions, where he contributed to the team’s 2023 USFL Championship victory. In 2022, he also spent a season as a player for the Michigan Panthers. Pettaway joined the Indianapolis Colts at training camp throughout the summer.

Hunter Henry, a premier tight end, may have been considered when Pettaway was signed, though this has not been confirmed. The Pats captain was sidelined for Sunday’s victory over the Denver Broncos because of a knee injury he sustained in Week 15 against the Kansas City Chiefs. Pettaway might give some much-needed depth to reserves Mike Gesicki and Pharaoh Brown, as well as fellow scout team member Matt Sokol, if Henry’s injury keeps keeping him off the field.
