At last, the Patriots are adding some depth to their backfield.
To join the Patriots, Ezekiel Elliott agreed to a one-year contract, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero. It’s a one-year contract worth up to $6 million, according to the article. According to Christopher Price of The Boston Globe, there are many incentives in this contract.
Elliott announced that he would be wearing the No. 15 that he wore while attending Ohio State in a tweet that was sent out quickly after the news broke.
Elliott, 28, only gained 876 yards from the ground in his seven-year career, despite scoring 12 touchdowns on the ground. In addition, he recorded career lows in receiving touchdowns(0), receiving yards(92), and receiving receptions (17).
Elliott was cut by the Cowboys this offseason because he was expected to count for about $17 million against the salary cap. Elliott was the No. 4 overall choice by the Cowboys in the 2016 draft.
Elliott moves up to the top of the Patriots’ running back depth chart, probably ahead of second-year backs Pierre Strong and Kevin Harris, with third-year back Rhamondre Stevenson. If healthy, Ty Montgomery, who sustained an injury early in camp, should also be included in that mix.
Elliott is expected to practice with the Patriots this week in Green Bay.
