Jaire Alexander, a cornerback for the Green Bay Packers, has been suspended by the organization for Sunday night’s crucial game against the Minnesota Vikings and Justin Jefferson.
Jaren Hall, a rookie quarterback for the Vikings, will start against the Packers.
The decision was prompted by Alexander designating himself as captain for the Packers’ Christmas Eve victory against Carolina, which ended in a 33-30 victory.
“It’s never for one thing,” general manager Brian Gutekunst and coach Matt LaFleur stated after making the choice. “I believe that everyone engaged has taught us many things along the process, and hopefully we are able to apply them. I believe we will. Going forward, I believe there will most likely be improved communication.”
For “conduct detrimental to the team,” Alexander received a one-game suspension, the team announced in a statement.
In a statement, Gutekunst stated, “The decision to suspend a player is never easy and not one we take lightly.” We regretfully have to take this action as a result of Jaire’s activities before the game in Carolina. We expect everyone in our organization to prioritize the team.
Despite our disappointment, Jaire and I had a productive chat this morning, and we anticipate that he will use this as a lesson as we go forward together. He is a valued component of this team and always will be, so we are excited to have him return next week.”
Alexander’s shoulder injury kept him out of Green Bay’s lineup for six games until he returned against Carolina. He was not one of LaFleur’s three weekly captains. Alexander believed he ought to be captain since the game was being played in Charlotte, the city where he was born. He thus created one for himself.
