Chris Heck, president of commercial operations of Aston Villa, thinks that pursuing plans to enlarge Villa Park would be a “bad idea.”

The long-term goal of the club was to construct a 50,000-seat stadium, which would have increased capacity by 8,000 in time for Villa Park to serve as the host venue for the European Championship in 2028.

According to UEFA regulations, the plan called for the North Stand to be totally demolished over the course of two seasons, with improvements finished the season before Euro 2028.

But as The Athletic has shown, there were a number of other factors involved in the rebuilding of Villa Park. For example, the West Midlands Combined Authority, which is composed of eighteen local councils, had to raise approximately £30 million ($38.2 million) in order to develop Witton, a nearby railway station, due to concerns about transport links. Eighty percent of fans are expected to use public transportation to get to the Villa Park

events during Euro 2028, according to UEFA. We did not think this was possible without redeveloping Witton.

Heck remarked, “I started to worry that we were adding too many seats too quickly.” Therefore, I think it’s critical that we take a step back and reconsider what’s ideal. I bring up parking and transportation in this sentence. Therefore, I don’t think it would be possible to add 10,000 seats.

The North Stand was originally intended to be demolished in June 2024. Christian Purlsow, the company’s then-CEO, announced plans in April 2022 to reconstruct the stand and create a “world-class entertainment venue” called “Villa Live.” The estimated costs were approximately £100 million ($125 million).

But since then, plans have been updated to account for inflation, so those initial expenses were anticipated to have climbed dramatically.

Heck stated, “I think it would be a bad idea to tear down one of our stands and play like we are for two years,” before revealing his new ideas. “From now on, everything should revolve around all of the fans.”
