Jonathan Gannon was the defensive coordinator for a Philadelphia Eagles squad that was faltering in its quest for a Super Bowl run at this time last season.
After a 1-3 December, Gannon returns to Philadelphia on Sunday afternoon as the head coach of the Arizona Cardinals (3-12), where he will take on a club whose hopes of winning the Super Bowl have dimmed.
The Eagles (11-4) defeated the New York Giants 33-25 at home on Monday to get back into the win column. After building a 20-3 halftime lead, Philadelphia didn’t quite look like the Super Bowl champions, as seen by two turnovers, nine penalties, and a shaky conclusion.
In the process, the Eagles ended a three-game losing run and gained ground on the Dallas Cowboys in the NFC East. If they can secure two more victories and some assistance, they still have a chance to secure the NFC’s top spot and a first-round playoff bye.
Last season, the Eagles advanced to Super Bowl LVII despite losing to Dallas and New Orleans in Weeks 16 and 17, when starting quarterback Jalen Hurts was sidelined due to a shoulder injury. Backup Gardner Minshew led the team to victory.
We obviously didn’t complete the task last year, and we’re all left with the aftertaste of, “Dang, wish we finished the job.” “But there were still a lot of special moments last year and in 2021, and Jonathan Gannon was a big part of that,” Eagles coach Nick Sirianni stated.
I cherish the relationship we share. I always support Coach Gannon, but this is the one week when I will obviously not do so.”
Although many of Gannon’s teammates agree with Sirianni, Gannon may not get much support from Philadelphia supporters.
Man, Gannon is my kid. Eagles defensive end Josh Sweat remarked, “I miss him.” “A terrific coach and a bundle of energy.
“We must whoop him in the butt. We cannot allow him to defeat us. But everything is love after that.”
Due to an ACL tear, Gannon was unable to coach his starting quarterback Kyler Murray for the first nine games.
The Cardinals have now dropped two straight games and four of their last five, including a Christmas Eve 27-16 loss at Chicago that left their road record to 1-7 for the year.
Arizona is expected to be selected with the second overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, while Philadelphia is attempting to strengthen its postseason standing.
“That’s something that’s not in my brain of playing spoiler,” Gannon stated. “I want to try to do a good enough job this week to give ourselves a chance to win.”
Gannon coached defensive backs in Indianapolis from 2018–20 while Sirianni was the offensive coordinator for the Colts, prior to serving as Sirianni’s defensive coordinator for two seasons.
Gannon stated of Sirianni, “He’s helped me a good deal, moving throughout this year with some different things.” He’s a constant source of help to me. We’re obviously very close, but the Eagles versus. Cardinals game is going to be fiercely competitive.”
Murray was sick, so he missed practice on Wednesday and Thursday. The quarterback was considered questionable and limited on Friday, but according to Gannon, he should be good to play on Sunday.
Arizona was without defensive tackle Leki Fotu (hand) and wide receiver Marquise Brown (heel). Quarterbacks Bobby Price (quad) and Garrett Williams (knee) are doubtful, as are linebackers Owen Pappoe (ankle).
For the third consecutive week, Eagles cornerback Darius Slay (knee) will be sidelined. Both tight end Albert Okwuegbunam (hamstring) and linebacker Zach Cunningham (knee) are doubtful.
