Breaking: A crippling new injury prevents Green Bay Packers star player from practicing and Packers’ Jaire Alexander suffers ‘freak’ injury days before Cowboys playoff game
A vital member of the Green Bay Packers defense missed Thursday’s practice with a troubling injury he recently received. The Packers were conducting their second day of practice this week as they prepared to play the Dallas Cowboys in the Wild Card round.
The game’s outcome could determine who coaches the Dallas Cowboys (or the Packers DC) next season. Former Packers coach Mike McCarthy is on the hot seat this postseason. The Cowboys are linked to Bill Belichick as a possible replacement for McCarthy.
The Packers, who have the youngest NFL team to make the playoffs since the Buffalo Bills in 1974, have a low probability of pulling an upset of the Cowboys this week. Part of that has to do with injuries. One key veteran defender is dealing with two injuries this week. Green Bay Packers CB Alexander missed Thursday’s practice
According to Matt Schneidman with The Athletic, Packers cornerback Jaire Alexander missed Thursday’s practice due to an ankle injury. Alexander’s ankle injury popped up in the Wild Card injury report this week following the Packers’ win over the Chicago Bears.
Alexander was limited at practice Tuesday due to the injuries. Alexander’s 2023 season has been plagued by multiple injuries, including his back and shoulder. He’s only played in seven games this season. However, Alexander missed one game due to serving a suspension. The Packers will hope Alexander can return to practice Friday. They’ll need him against a Cowboys offense with wide receiver CeeDee Lamb playing All-Pro football this winter.
Yesterday was a jog-through. LaFleur said he’s considered day to day and they thought it was best if he didn’t go today.” The Packers held the team’s first full practice of the week after going through a walk-through on Wednesday. Alexander, who is on the injury report with shoulder and ankle injuries, was already estimated to be a limited participant in practice.
Alexander is expected to be a key component of the Packers’ strategy to cover Cowboys wide CeeDee Lamb if he participates in Sunday’s wild-card game against Dallas. Lamb is quarterback Dak Prescott’s favorite target and leads the NFL in receptions. Alexander might even be matched up with Lamb wherever he goes on the field by the Packers. The Packers would start Corey Ballentine and youngster Carrington Valentine at cornerback if Alexander is unable to play.
The Packers suspended Alexander for the team’s game against the Minnesota Vikings two weeks ago. He was punished for the prior week’s coin toss against the Carolina Panthers despite not being a captain, and then almost.
