Colts sign Terrell Bynum, a former Chargers wide receiver, to a reserve/future contract and Colts Projected to Add Speedy CB to Bolster Pass Defense.
The Chargers first signed the 6’0,” 188-pound wide receiver as an undrafted rookie free agency out of USC/Washington. Prior to being later re-signed to Los Angeles’ practice squad this season and eventually elevated ahead of their Week 11 matchup against the Green Bay Packers, he was a member of the team’s final roster cuts.
He participated in ten games for USC as a collegiate player in 2022, hauling in 16 receptions for 159 yards (9.9 average) and one score. Before joining USC, Bynum played for Washington in 34 games (19 starts) from 2017 to 21. He finished with 65 receptions for 934 yards (14.4 avg.) and six touchdowns. In 2021, he received honorable mention status in the All-PAC-12.
With an outside chance to make the Colts’ final 53-man roster in 2024—Michael Pittman Jr., Isaiah McKenzie, and Juwann Winfree are all free agents, though Pittman Jr. ought to be re-signed—Bynum should add potential training camp and preseason depth.
Early in the summer, there was a lot of talk linking the Indianapolis Colts to cornerbacks in the NFL rookie draft class of 2024. This week’s mock draft by Dane Brugler of The Athletic carried on that trend. Brugler projected that the Colts will take Clemson cornerback Nate Wiggins at No. 15 overall in the first round of the 2024 NFL mock draft, which was published on January 16. “I would love to see the Colts add LSU’s Brian Thomas Jr. here, but they must also improve defensively on the back end — especially in a division with C.J. Stroud and Trevor Lawrence,” Brugler stated. “With his length, short-area suddenness and 4.3 speed, Wiggins has the traits that fit what the organization target.”
In 2023, the Colts had a fairly youthful secondary, particularly at cornerback. If Indianapolis doesn’t make big free-agent additions to the position, it might be even younger in 2019. The Colts will have unrestricted free agents in Tony Brown and Kenny Moore II this offseason. With the exception of pending free agents, Indianapolis’ top two cornerbacks right now are Jaylon Jones and JuJu Brents. It was their inaugural season in 2023.
It might be more sensible for the Colts to get an experienced cornerback because of this. However, selecting a cornerback in the first round to go alongside Brents—who was selected in the second round of the 2023 draft—is also a compelling choice. During the 2023 season, Wiggins played in 10 games for Clemson and recorded 29 total tackles, including 1 tackle for loss, 1 sack, and 2 interceptions. He totaled 60 tackles in 27 career collegiate games, including 3 for loss, 3 interceptions, and 21 pass defenses. Wiggins is ranked as the best cornerback in the upcoming 2024 draft class according to the ESPN consensus draft rankings. Wiggins is ranked No. 12 overall in the class by ESPN.
