Bills Interviewing Fired Eagles Coach for Defensive Coordinator and Eagles QB Jalen Hurts Could Join NFC Rival, Says Insider.
The dual duties of head coach and defensive coordinator didn’t wind up having a significant negative impact on Sean McDermott and the Buffalo Bills this season, despite additional postseason disappointment en route to a late turnaround and an appearance in the AFC Divisional. However, Buffalo’s window for a Super Bowl runout is closing, and the Bills have already indicated that they intend to relieve some of McDermott’s workload in the best interests of the team.
The Bills are interviewing former Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator Sean Desai for the same role in Buffalo, according to sources from Ian Rapoport of NFL Network on Saturday. “Former Eagles DC Sean Desai is once again a strong defensive coordinator candidate, this time interviewing with the Bills and Falcons today, sources say,” Rapoport wrote on Twitter. “A potential quick rebound off Philly.”
After spending just one season with the Eagles, Desai was recently let go. He was fired from his play-calling position prior to Philadelphia’s Week 15 loss to Seattle. He was once the defensive coordinator for the Chicago Bears and the defensive assistant for the Seattle Seahawks.
The defense declined even further following the hiring of Matt Patricia as head coach, and this was only one of six losses in the final seven games of the regular season (including playoff games). According to a source, Jalen Hurts of the Philadelphia Eagles may be able to start in lieu of a starter from an NFC opponent.
Hurts doesn’t appear to be interested in leaving Philadelphia, and the Eagles don’t appear to be ready to part with their franchise quarterback, but Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk believes that Hurts would be better off joining the Seattle Seahawks. Florio suggests Seattle as a possible destination in the event that Hurts decides he wants to go.
On the January 24 edition of his “PFT Live” program, Florio said to his co-host Chris Simms, “You can throw the Seahawks in as well, depending who the new head coach is.” “You have the option to terminate Geno Smith’s contract, and if the new head coach determines that Jalen Hurts needs a fresh start and wants to leave Philadelphia, we can create something very special here,’ you can bring him in.”
It goes without saying that the Seahawks’ offense would appear different under a new head coach, and any new quarterback would gain advantages.
The Eagles experienced the most difficult stretch of the season of any team vying for a postseason spot. After beginning the season with a 10-1 record, Philadelphia dropped six of their next seven games, including a humiliating 32-9 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the playoff wild card round.
