Austin Ekeler’s media proposal was signed by the Dallas Cowboys; is this a long-term deal in NFL free agency?
The Dallas Cowboys are giving conflicting messages about how they intend to resolve their running back problem in 2024.
On the one hand, a team source tells CowboysSI.com that they are more likely to draft a running back than to pursue a well-known veteran player, mostly to replace Tony Pollard, who is expected to enter free agency in March.
However, when it comes to acquiring talent, team owner Jerry Jones has spoken of being “different” and “disruptive,” using the word “influential” to describe the potential calibre of new additions.
Amidst our conversations regarding players such as Derrick Henry and Saquon Barkley, Bleacher Report interrupts, identifying Austin Ekeler as a possible fix for the Cowboys.
Regarding Ekeler, we have two opinions: Ekeler has played his whole seven-year career for the Los Angeles Chargers, but he has made it clear that he has no intention of coming back. If, however, he is seen as something of a reclamation project, considering that he just finished a season in which he played in 14 games and gained just 628 yards and five touchdowns while averaging just 3.5 yards per carry, that is something to talk about.
However, Ekeler does not present himself in that manner, and Spotrac believes the 28-year-old is still deserving of a $22 million, three-year contract.
Ekeler showed off his flexibility as a weapon as recently as 2022, when he added 107 receptions for 722 yards and five more touchdowns in addition to rushing for 915 yards and 13 touchdowns.
That could be able to be recovered. It is unlikely that any Dallas running back will receive a large financial commitment. Furthermore, it would be foolish to commit long-term resources to a 28-year-old running back who just had a bad season.
