After taking a week off, the Indianapolis Colts defeated the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 27–20 on November 26.
The Colts were beginning to gain momentum as they won their third straight game. After missing the first four games of the season, former All-Pro running back Jonathan Taylor appeared to be returning to his former form as he led the Colts to win that day. That afternoon, Taylor rushed for 91 yards on 15 carries and two touchdowns against the Buccaneers defence.

Although the crowd erupted in celebration of the win, nobody realised that Taylor’s performance had a cost. Taylor discovered there was a problem with his hand while he was running around.

“I couldn’t even tell you; I just realised something wasn’t right when I returned to the sidelines. This feels a little strange,” Taylor recalled. “Was examined by the trainers, assumed it was a jam, heavy tape job, heavy tape job, until, of course, the conclusion of the match revealed the true situation.

“Analysis of Taylor’s hand further showed that it was more than a jam. The running back’s right thumb had sustained a torn ligament. When he is carrying the football, he prefers to use his dominant thumb. For a running back, a thumb injury might not seem like a major concern, but it is essential to ball security.

In order to prevent further harm, the Colts and Taylor determined that surgery on the thumb was the best course of action. He wouldn’t be out for the season, but his recuperation would keep him out for a few weeks. But Taylor was quite sad that he would have to watch from the sidelines once more, especially after missing the first quarter of the season due to injury.
“I was sick, for myself,” Taylor acknowledged. “I knew we had a strong squad since I am familiar with the personnel, players, and mindset we have. I was just feeling awful, thinking, “Man, another one? I just had my first one. Whoa!’… Nobody enjoys being sliced open in any way.”

The Colts’ running game has suffered without #28 in the backfield, despite Taylor’s faith in his teammates to finish the job. Following Taylor’s injury, the Colts ran for 101 yards on 41 carries (2.5 ypc) in the first two games. When Taylor wasn’t available to start the season, Zack Moss performed admirably as the starting back, but he wasn’t having
