Indianapolis Colts Shane Steichen Discusses Anthony Richardson, Reggie Wayne - Sports Illustrated Indianapolis Colts News, Analysis and More

The Indianapolis Colts’ 2023 season may be gone, but there are still a lot of good things to remember about it.
Despite injuries and inexperienced players on his Indianapolis roster, first-year head coach Shane Steichen managed to scrape out nine victories.
These nine victories ultimately proved insufficient to secure the AFC South or secure a postseason berth. However, this is a huge improvement considering that the Colts won four games the year prior to Steichen’s arrival.

At pivotal moments and stages of the season, there were numerous challenges to overcome in addition to the presence of stars and veterans such as running back Jonathan Taylor, defensive end DeForest Buckner, wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr., and cornerback Kenny Moore II.
Nevertheless, with experienced quarterback Gardner Minshew leading the offense, Steichen remained unfazed even after losing freshman quarterback Anthony Richardson to injury after week five.

Steichen provided more information about Richardson and Houston Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud in a recent interview with Chris Long on The Green Light.

Steichen on Stroud and the similarities in Richardson’s abilities.
“He had his eyes down the field and could create outside the pocket. He would make those large ones.”
“Sometimes he’d make them with his legs, but he’d also create them getting outside the pocket and making these, you know, 30-yard in-cut throws, you know, moving outside pocket.

“Steichen concluded by expressing his excitement for Richardson’s comeback to the field.
What his playwriting skills have taught him to bring to the table. You know, the big plays he was able to produce, the touchdowns he was able to create with his legs during the first four weeks of play. Definitely looking forward to seeing him back on the field this autumn.

“Richardson is a good fit for Steichen’s attacking strategy of increasing explosiveness.
The Colts have a chance to challenge the Texans, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Tennessee Titans for the AFC South title and might make a big impression in a difficult conference in 2024 as long as Richardson stays healthy.
On the podcast, Steichen also gave credit to assistant linebacker coach Cato June and wide receivers coach Reggie Wayne.
