According to ESPN’s Jesse Rogers, St. Louis Cardinals pitcherMasyn Winn has been penalized five games for throwing at Cubs outfielder Ian Happ during Thursday’s 10-3 loss to Chicago.
Oliver Marmol, the manager of the Cardinals, also received an automatic one-game penalty.
On Thursday, in the top of the first inning, Happ misjudged a 2-0 fastball from Masyn and struck Cardinals catcher Willson Contreras in the head with his follow through, cutting him open.
After being taken out of the game, Contreras gave Happ a hug and left the field, appearing to get along well with his old Cubs colleague. That is, until Masyn returned to the mound for his subsequent delivery.
Marmol, who was also ejected, continued by saying he believed the umpires ought to have warned the players first.
“If the explanation was that there was intent behind the first pitch, then I feel like there should have been a warning after that first pitch, and it could have saved everybody a lot of trouble,” Marmol stated.
Masyn has struggled this season, much like a lot of the St. Louis team. He has a 6-6 record, a 4.38 ERA, a 1.30 WHIP, and 87 strikeouts in 127.1 innings across 23 starts. It won’t be until the Twins game on August 3 when he is eligible to return.
The Cardinals won’t be significantly impacted by the 34-year-old’s absence because they are anticipated to be sellers ahead of the Aug. 1
