The Detroit Lions have been making signings and re-signings in free agency, but there’s another type of deal that could be around the corner: extensions. Which players on expiring deals could earn a new deal this offseason?

Although general manager Brad Holmes has done an outstanding job assembling the Detroit Lions team, his prudent investments will start to show a negative return in 2024.

The Lions have a fair number of crucial players with contracts expiring after the 2024 season. Jared Goff found redemption with Detroit, but he has yet to find a new contract. Will both parties come together to keep the quarterback under contract for the future? Speaking of Goff, the emergence of Amon-Ra St. Brown has been a boon to Goff’s time in Detroit. Not only is St. Brown a crucial part of one of the NFL’s deadliest offenses, but St. Brown has entrenched himself as one of the best receivers in the league. Another key pending free agent on the offensive side of the ball is veteran tackle Taylor Decker.

There are plenty of defense staples with expiring contracts available. Currently in the final year of their rookie contracts are three players from Holmes’ first draft class: Alim McNeill, Derrick Barnes, and Ifeatu Melifonwu. Carlton Davis, who was just acquired, has one year remaining on his contract after being traded by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Nonetheless, the Lions did rework his deal last week, possibly indicating that a re-signing rather than an extension is what’s being hinted at. Will any of the key players on the roster get tied up this spring since they could leave the team next year?
