Due to a sprained left ankle, youngster Victor Wembanyama of the Spurs will miss Monday night’s game against the Phoenix Suns.

Having tested his ankle at San Antonio’s morning shootaround, the 7-foot-3 French center was declared out.

The injury is not serious, according to San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich, and Wembanyama’s chances of playing against Utah on Wednesday are “a little better than 50-50.”

During Saturday’s 131-106 loss to Phoenix, Wembanyama sustained an injury. During the game, the Suns led by as much as 32 points in the fourth quarter, when he did not participate.

Popovich stated, “He adjusted it at some point during (Saturday’s game) and continued playing, and it bothered him afterwards.”

In 21 minutes versus Phoenix, Wembanyama finished with 13 points, five rebounds, four assists, and a blocked shot.

In 29 minutes per game, the top choice from the NBA draft of the previous year is averaging 20.7 points, 10.4 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 3.4 blocks, and 1.3 steals.

Wembanyama is the front-runner for NBA Rookie of the Year, but San Antonio could end the season with the poorest record in the team’s history.

The Spurs (15-56) must win five of their next 11 games in order to stay below the 20-62 record set in 1997.
