Just a few days before the start of training camp, the Boston Celtics have a new coach. The Celtics announced on Thursday that second-year Jeo will be suspended for the whole 2022–2023 season due to “violations of team policies.” As a result, Joe Mazzulla will take over as the team’s interim head coach.

According to a person with knowledge of the matter who spoke with USA TODAY Sports, Udoka had a consensual relationship with a female employee of the Celtics. Since they were not authorized to talk about the delicate nature of the subject, the person asked to remain anonymous. Since 2019, Mazzulla has assisted the Celtics as a coach, and he will take Udoka’s place going forward. After winning the Eastern Conference and making it to the NBA Finals, Boston was defeated by the Golden State Warriors.

Mazzulla, 34, is a native to Johnston, Rhode Island. He is the son of Dan Mazzulla, who coached girls basketball at Johnston High School in their hometown.

Mazzulla won three state titles at Bishop Hendricken High School in Warwick, Rhode Island, and played four seasons at West Virginia University under head coaches John Beilein and Bob Huggins. The Mountaineers made four-straight men’s NCAA tournament appearances during Mazzulla’s collegiate career, including a Final Four run in 2010. He also won a Big East tournament championship and NIT tournament championship.
